Back in the heyday of the steam railway, goods of all descriptions would have been carried by rail across the country. Coal and other minerals would have been loaded into open wagons, but other merchandise which needed protection from the elements would have travelled in covered vans. Some of these wagons would have been owned by the railway companies, and would have been painted in sober colours and lettered with the company's initials, but others would have carried more distinctive colour schemes along with the name of the private company which owned them. And all of these wagons and vans would have been coupled up together behind one of the workhorse goods locomotives which were the backbone of the steam railway. The refrigerator vans of the Hull and Barnsley would have carried perishable goods from Hull Docks to customers across the north of England and the Midlands, and the next wagon in the train could well have been a coal wagon from a nationwide company of factors such as Thrutchley.
